The Syrian Embassy in Uganda has clarified that Ugandan national Ajok Vikie has not been sentenced to death, amid circulating reports suggesting otherwise.
Speaking from his office in Kampala, Syrian Ambassador Dr. Tamouh Moustafa emphasized that Ajok is facing legal proceedings concerning the death of her employer, but no death sentence has been issued.
“The legal process is ongoing. This was a case concerning a specific event. There are no hidden motives or political implications,” he said.
Ajok Vikie, who was employed as a domestic worker in Damascus, was detained on January 29, 2026, following the death of her 87-year-old employer, Syrian actress Huda Shaarawi.
Authorities reported that Ajok later confessed to the killing in an official statement.
Dr. Moustafa assured that the embassy is closely monitoring the case and remains committed to safeguarding Ajok’s rights throughout the judicial process. He urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could create unnecessary panic or speculation.
The clarification comes amid growing concern in Uganda over citizens facing legal issues abroad. The embassy reiterated that Ajok Vikie’s trial will proceed according to due process under Syrian law.
